How Do I Perform a Water Change?
A basic water change doesn’t need to be complicated.
Use an aquarium siphon or gravel vacuum to remove water while cleaning accumulated debris from appropriate areas of the substrate.
Then replace the removed water with fresh water that has been properly treated for your water source.
If you’re using municipal tap water containing chlorine or chloramine, use an appropriate aquarium water conditioner according to its instructions.
Try to avoid dramatic temperature differences between the replacement water and the aquarium water.
Don’t Remove the Fish
For an ordinary partial water change, your fish can generally stay in the aquarium.
Repeatedly catching and moving them can create more unnecessary stress than simply performing the maintenance carefully around them.
Work calmly and give the fish room to move away from the siphon.
Don’t Destroy Your Beneficial Bacteria
Here’s another common beginner mistake:
Someone changes the water, replaces every filter cartridge, scrubs every decoration and thoroughly cleans everything at the same time.
The aquarium may look spotless afterward, but an aquarium isn’t supposed to be sterile.
Beneficial bacteria living primarily on your filter media, substrate and other surfaces are an important part of your aquarium’s nitrogen cycle.
When filter media needs cleaning, it can often be gently rinsed in removed aquarium water rather than aggressively sterilized under chlorinated tap water. Follow the recommendations for your particular filtration system and media.
